What a Shop TV is
A Shop TV is a wall display for your shop. Mechanics look up and see what's in the bays, what's late, what's waiting and the day's schedule. Nobody has to ask the front counter.
It is view-only. Nobody touches the TV. Technicians do their work in the technician workspace, and the TV shows the result.
You can have more than one TV. Each one has its own view. Shop TV is included on every plan, as long as your shop's account is active (a trial or a paid plan).
What you need
- A screen
- Any TV with a built-in web browser, or a streaming stick or small computer that can open a web page full screen. Steps vary by device, so check what yours offers.
- The Wi-Fi
- The TV needs to be online.
- A way to type
- You only type a short address once. A keyboard works, or the TV's remote.
- An owner or manager sign-in
- Only owners and managers can add a TV.
Set up a TV
- 1On the TV's browser, open app.gearboxly.com/tv. It shows a 6-digit code.
- 2In Gearboxly, an owner or manager goes to Settings, then Shop TVs, then Add a TV.
- 3Type the code, name the TV, and choose its screens.
- 4Save. The TV pairs within a few seconds.
The four screens
- Bay board
- A tile for each technician with the car, the job, the customer's first name and the RO number. A timer shows time on the job against the estimate: green, amber or red. A late flag shows when the promised time has passed. A tech with nothing assigned shows Open. Unassigned work shows in a Needs a tech tile.
- Needs attention
- Big counts for waiting on parts, waiting on approval, ready for pickup, past promised time and tech requests. Each one has a list under it.
- Today's schedule
- The day's appointments.
- Tech queue
- Who's free, who's busy, and what's next.
Options for each TV
- One screen or rotate
- Pick one fixed screen, or rotate through several. Rotation changes every 20 seconds by default. You can set it anywhere from 8 to 300 seconds.
- Dark or light
- Dark is the default. Switch to light if your shop is bright.
- Customer-facing
- Turn this on for a lobby TV. It hides names, RO numbers, technicians, jobs and timers. It shows only the vehicle, the status and the promised time. The Needs attention and Tech queue screens are not available on a customer-facing TV.
What a TV never shows
A Shop TV never shows prices, totals, phone numbers, emails, addresses, notes, VINs, plates or customers' last names. That is true on every TV, customer-facing or not.
Staying up to date
The TV updates about every 7 seconds. If the network drops, it shows Reconnecting and keeps the last picture on screen until it's back. It also restarts itself at 4 AM every day.
Add more TVs
Repeat the setup steps for each TV. Give each one a clear name, like Bay 1 wall or Lobby, and its own screens. Owners and managers can edit or remove a TV any time under Settings, then Shop TVs.
Revoke a TV
Revoke a TV from Settings, then Shop TVs. A revoked TV goes back to the pairing screen and shows nothing from your shop. Use this if a TV is moved, sold or lost.
If something is wrong
- The code doesn't work
- It has probably expired. Codes last 10 minutes and work once. Refresh the TV page to get a new one.
- The TV says Reconnecting
- Check the TV's Wi-Fi. It keeps the last picture and catches up when the network is back.
- A paused notice
- Your shop's account needs attention. Open Billing in Gearboxly to fix it. Shops that are cancelled, suspended or unpaid see this notice.
- The TV screen goes to sleep
- Turn off the TV's screensaver or sleep timer in its settings.
- Wrong shop or wrong screens
- Edit the TV under Settings, then Shop TVs, to change its screens. If it's paired to the wrong shop, revoke it and pair it again.
